Two U.S. Navy men stationed in Bath were seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash early Saturday morning in remote Somerset County, police said Monday.

James Ross, chief deputy at the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, said the single-vehicle crash on Route 15, in Rockwood, near Moosehead Lake, happened at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Somerset County Deputies Brian Crater and Cpl. Wilfred Dodge investigated the report and found that the driver of a 2017 Toyota was traveling west on Route 15 when he lost control on a curve, causing the vehicle to leave the road and hit a large rock — moving the rock approximately 8 feet — and destroying the car.

Artur Eduardovich Oberst, 29, of Chesapeake, Virginia, the owner and driver of the car, was taken to Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, suffering from “serious lacerations to the head and shoulder pain,” according to Ross.

The passenger, Antonio De Jesus Chavez, 27, of Los Angeles, California, was flown by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with suspected internal injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of the Rockwood Fire Department and Rockwood Rescue. U.S. Route 201 Service towed the vehicle from the scene.

The crash was reconstructed by Deputy Brian Crater of the sheriff’s office. Speed and alcohol are both being investigated as contributing factors, according to Ross. Charges are likely, pending blood test results, he said.
