Fairmount Township, PA : 2 men killed, 1 injured in two-vehicle crash on state Route 118 in Fairmount Township on Wednesday morning, December 31, 2014
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Two men were killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on state Route 118.
State police in Shickshinny said Donald R. West, 70, of Shickshinny, was driving a 2005 Subaru Baja on Bethel Hill Road and pulled the vehicle into the intersection with Route 118 at about 10:48 a.m., when the Subaru was struck by a 2000 Dodge Stratus being driven east on Route 118 by Justin A. Heintzelman, 32, of Benton.
Heintzelman was pronounced dead at the scene by Luzerne County Coroner Bill Lisman.
West was transported by medical helicopter to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township, where he later died from injuries suffered in the crash, police said.
West’s passenger, Mark Schultz, 42, address unknown, also was transported by medical helicopter to the Geisinger facility for treatment of moderate injuries and was expected to live, police said.
Police determined that West violated a section of state vehicle code related to stop signs and yield signs.
They said West and Schultz were both using seat belts; Heintzelman was not.
Assisting at the crash were Fairmount Township Fire Department and Fire Police, and Kunkle Volunteer Fire Co.
