The driver of a tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition after the tractor-trailer overturned in a five-vehicle accident on southbound
Interstate 81 in the Chambersburg area early Thursday, according to a supervisor for Franklin County Emergency Services.
The southbound lanes of I-81 were closed between Exit 14 (Pa. 316/Wayne Ave.) and Exit 10 (Pa. 914/Marion) for several hours. As of 9 a.m., one lane had been reopened. All lanes were reopened by 11 a.m.
The accident involved a tractor-trailer and four cars, the supervisor said.
It happened when the tractor-trailer traveling northbound on Interstate 81 traveled into the southbound lane, side-swiped another vehicle, overturned on the embankment, and lost a load of galvanized pipe onto the roadway, according to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police.
Nobody else was injured, police said.
The accident was reported at 3:38 a.m. Thursday, according to the release.
