An elderly Mill Valley man died Monday after driving the wrong way on a freeway and crashing into the
center divider, the California Highway Patrol said.
Nobuo Kada, 85, crashed an Infiniti around 2:33 a.m. after driving south in the northbound direction
of Interstate 680 near the Benicia Bridge, according to the CHP. After driving in the wrong
direction, the car hit a concrete divider.
The crash had trapped Kada inside the car, and he died after emergency crews freed him and took him
to a hospital.
Three left lanes on northbound I-680 were blocked after the crash, which initially was reported by
the CHP to have involved two cars. The CHP issued a SIG Alert for severe traffic, which remained in
effect until just before 4 a.m.
The CHP is investigating whether drugs or alcohol caused the crash, or whether a medical event may
have occurred.
