San Diego, CA : Man dies in fiery crash on Interstate 8 near SDSU early Sunday, May 1, 2016
A driver died in a fiery, multi-vehicle crash on east Interstate 8 near San Diego State University early Sunday, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The victim, in his late 30s or early 40s, was driving east in a BMW when, for unknown reasons, his car drifted into the center median and struck a concrete barrier about 4:45 a.m., CHP Officer Jake Sanchez said. Soon after, a Ford F-150 driven by an 18-year-old man struck the car.
At some point, the BMW overturned, the driver was ejected, and the car caught fire, Sanchez said. Investigators are still determining if those incidents occurred when the car went off the freeway or after it was struck by the pickup.
Another truck, a Chevrolet Silverado, then struck the driver of the BMW, whose body was in the roadway, Sanchez said. The second pickup swerved and crashed onto the right side of the freeway.
The driver of the Ford was not injured, and the driver of the Chevrolet was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Neither driver was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, Sanchez said.
Eastbound lanes were closed at Waring Road for hours while officers investigated the debris-filled scene. The freeway reopened about 11:50 a.m.
