Warwick ,NY : 2 teens dead after driver’s ed car, semitrailer collide on Tuesday morning. ,July 14th 2015
Two 16-year-old high school students were killed and two were injured along with their instructor when their driver’s ed car was struck by a truck in a rural intersection in southeastern New York, 4 miles from the New Jersey border Tuesday morning.
Warwick Police Lt. Thomas Maslanka said five people were in the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu owned by Decat Driving School of Middletown: the 60-year-old instructor in the front passenger seat, a 16-year-old girl at the wheel, and three 16-year-old boys in the back seat. He said all were wearing seat belts.
Maslanka said a westbound Freightliner truck owned by Never Stop Transport of Port Jervis, driven by a 61-year-old Pennsylvania man, hit the rear driver’s side door of the car in the intersection when the car pulled into its path. Maslanka said the car had a stop sign and flashing red light and the truck had a flashing yellow caution light. The truck wasn’t pulling a trailer.
One boy was pronounced dead at the scene and a second was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The third was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, Maslanka said.
The instructor and trucker were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Orange Regional Medical Center, and the teenage girl was expected to be treated and released at Westchester Medical Center, Maslanka said.
While police didn’t release any names, Goshen School Superintendent Daniel Connor identified the students in a letter to the community on the school website Tuesday evening. He said Antonio Baglivo and Paul VanDoran died in the crash. He said Lucas O’Connor and Claudia Krebs were hospitalized.
“This is a tough one,” Connor said by phone. “Both were outstanding young men, great students, fun to have in class, well-respected and well-liked.”
The high school gym will be open starting at noon Wednesday with counselors available to students and others, Connor said.
