Milwaukee, WI : Two people killed and three people injured when a stolen car crashed on Milwaukee’s north side on Wednesday afternoon, March 25, 2015
Two youths in a speeding stolen car were killed and two others were injured Wednesday when the driver ran a stop sign and collided with another car in Milwaukee's Washington Heights neighborhood, police said.
A 47-year-old man driving the other vehicle was also injured in the crash about 3:30 p.m. at N. Hi Mount Blvd. and W. Lloyd St., according to Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn.
The injuries to the youths are not life-threatening, and the 47-year-old man was treated at a hospital and released, Flynn told reporters at the scene.
The incident "encapsulates so much of the challenge we are currently facing here in Milwaukee with stolen cars being driven by youths with prior criminal involvement," the chief said.
According to Flynn:
About 3:30 p.m. the stolen car was traveling south on Hi Mount at a high rate of speed when the driver passed by a northbound Milwaukee police squad.
The driver then ran the stop sign at Lloyd St. and was struck by an eastbound auto, flipping the stolen car on its roof.
A female officer took off her gun belt, squeezed through a window of the car and tried to disentangle the occupants inside. Two were found screaming and two were dead.
The two killed were a 17-year-old boy and another boy "who appears to be very youthful," Flynn said.
The two injured teens are 16 and 17, and both are in police custody, the police chief said.
The stolen car was a 2013 Toyota taken with the keys from Milwaukee's south side two days ago, said Flynn, pointing to a recent similar incident in which a retired couple were killed when their car was struck by a stolen SUV on Milwaukee's southwest side.
"These are no longer just property crimes," Flynn said.
"People are being killed."
