Lynchburg, VA : A head-on collision involving two vehicles on Saturday, June 17, 2017
A head-on collision involving two vehicles on Timberlake Road late Saturday killed a man and shut down both sections of the road for several hours, Virginia State Police said Sunday.
The crash happened at 11:30 p.m. in the eastbound lane of Timberlake Road in Campbell County about 500 feet from Mary Ann Drive, said Trooper T.M. Wertz.
A white Chevrolet pickup truck heading westbound struck an oncoming Jeep Cherokee driving eastbound, Wertz said.
Wertz said it was a “wrong way driver” case in which the driver of the Chevrolet, who was extracted from the vehicle and killed in the incident, crossed over into the other lane and struck the Cherokee head on.
The crash is under investigation, Wertz said. He said he could not say why the deceased driver was in the wrong lane and his identify wasn’t immediately released Sunday pending notification of the family.
No passengers were in either vehicle, Wertz said. The driver of the Cherokee, who was wearing a seatbelt, had minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital, Wertz said.
The deceased driver was not wearing a seatbelt, Wertz said. Both sides of Timberlake in that section were shut down and reopened at about 3:15 a.m., he said.
The Brookeville-Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department, Evington Volunteer Fire Department and Lyn-Dan Volunteer Fire Department responded.
Wertz said it “was the luck of the draw” that emergency responders who were previously at a house fire on nearby Timberlake Drive Saturday were able to get to the crash scene quickly.
Earlier: Both sides of Timberlake Road in Campbell County were shut down after a two-vehicle wreck late Saturday.
The wreck occurred just before midnight west of Waterlick Road, near Grove Avenue, according to Evington Volunteer Fire Department officials.
Flares and emergency responders lined the road, preventing vehicles from entering the area.
The Virginia State Police, Brookville-Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department, Campbell County Sheriff's Department, Evington Volunteer Fire Department, Lyn-Dan Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Transportation responded.
