One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash at a busy Muncie intersection Tuesday afternoon.
Patricia L. Tuck, 83, of Muncie died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash at the intersection of Oakwood and McGalliard on the city's northwest side, according to Delaware County Deputy Coroner Charles Casada.
Police said that the collision occurred when both vehicles attempted to cross the intersection during a caution light at Oakwood and McGalliard roads. The accident caused both roads to be closed to traffic for more than an hour while emergency personnel cleared the scene.
Police on the scene said it appeared that the driver of a maroon Ford Taurus was attempting to turn left from the westbound lane of McGalliard when it was struck on the passenger side by a beige Chevy Tahoe going eastbound on McGalliard. Tuck, the passenger of the Taurus was unresponsive on scene, and officials later confirmed the passenger died.
The drivers of both vehicles were also sent to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital because of injuries suffered, but the extent of the injuries was not immediately known.
Traffic on Oakwood and both lanes of McGalliard were closed as of 5 p.m. with police expecting roads to be closed until 6 p.m. or later. Reroutes for traffic were along North Winston Drive for eastbound McGalliard and North Rosewood for westbound traffic. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, and police were positioned at nearby intersections directing traffic away.
