A Madison Heights man died after a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning, police said.
Keith B. Harris, 36, was driving a 2015 Ford Focus north on Virginia 163, north of Early Drive, at 12:36 a.m. when the car ran off the right side of the road, Virginia State Police said.
The car struck a guardrail, went over the guardrail, overturned and hit several trees.
Harris died at the scene.
“He was not wearing a seat belt. Alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation,” state police said in a news release.
According to a news release from the Lynchburg Police Department, Harris was pulled over by an officer, who suspected him of driving drunk, on the John Lynch Bridge minutes before the fatal crash.
According to the release, the officer’s in-car video “shows the officer approached the driver’s side window and shortly after the car sped away.”
The officer followed the car and found it crashed near Early Drive.
“At no point was the officer in direct pursuit of the vehicle,” the release said. “The LPD is cooperating fully with the State Police investigation.”
The sergeant involved in the incident has not been placed on administrative leave and will remain unidentified until the State Police investigation is complete. He has been with the department since 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2012, the news release said.
