STURGIS, SD : Meade County fatal crash victims identified on Tuesday 25th October 2016
The two people killed in a two-vehicle crash near Sturgis on Tuesday have been identified as two area residents.
Those killed in the wreck were Ronald Audus of Belle Fourche and Leah Hankins of Nisland.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred just after 9 a.m. Tuesday when a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup was southbound on Bear Butte Road and a 1984 Ford F-250 pickup was traveling east on 194th Street. The intersection is about 12 miles north of Sturgis.
The 1984 Ford, driven by Audus, failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Bear Butte Road. The two vehicles collided in the intersection. Audus, 67, died of injuries he received in the crash.
Jaymes Simmons, 30, of Nisland, was driving the 2007 Ford F-150 and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Hankins, 32, was the passenger and was ejected from the pickup. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of three occupants were wearing seat belts.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating.
