Auburn, CA : Motorcylist lane splitter killed in I-80 crash on Sunday, January, 28th 2018
A 38-year-old Citrus Heights man riding a motorcycle was seen splitting traffic and moving ahead of traffic flow before fatally crashing Sunday on Interstate 80 in Rocklin.
The man, identified by the Placer County Coroner’s Office as Ruben James Puga, was changing lanes after entering I-80 westbound from Highway 65, a California Highway Patrol Auburn office report said. Traveling on dry pavement, the man’s 2007 Suzuki sideswiped a car and then went out of control, crashing into the back of an SUV. The motorcycle rider was thrown off his bike, the Highway Patrol said.
Occupants of the two vehicles struck by the motorcycle were uninjured. The car driver was a 47-year-old woman, with a driver and one passenger aboard. The driver of the SUV, a 25-year-old Pittsburg man, had a driver and two passengers.
Westbound lanes were temporarily blocked by emergency vehicles while the collision was being investigation. It was reported at 5:35 p.m. The crash took place just east of Taylor Road.
