Maryville, TN : A two-car crash involving a Knoxville Police officer on Thursday, July 13, 2017
A Jefferson City man died Thursday as a result of a two-car crash involving a Knoxville Police officer.
Dale Emerson Smelser, 91, Jefferson City, was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center after the crash. He was pronounced dead at the medical center.
According to a Knoxville Police Department release, KPD Officer Thomas Clinton was traveling near the intersection of Henley Street and Summit Hill Drive when he answered another officer's call for assistance around 12:40 p.m. Thursday.
The release said Smelser, driving a Honda Odyssey van in the southbound lane of Broadway Avenue, turned left in front of Clinton's cruiser in an attempt to pull into Lincoln Memorial University's Duncan School of Law parking lot. The subsequent collision sent both men to University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Knox County Sheriff's Office will perform an investigation into the crash while Clinton remains on administrative leave pending the result, per standard KPD policy.
