Wye Mills, MD : Five in Va. family killed in crash with tractor trailer in Queen Anne's County on Saturday, January 10, 2015
Five members of a Virginia family were killed early Saturday when a tractor trailer hit their car and rolled over it in Queen Anne's County, Md., police say.
Maryland State Police say the family had left Greenbush, Va, Friday night on a trip to Baltimore. The truck driver was believed to be headed to his home in Delaware.
The victims are identified Regina Ayres, 24, of Greenbush, Virginia; her 7-year-old daughter Jordan Ayres; her 2-month-old son Jonathan Ayres; her boyfriend Travis Straton, 25, of Onancock, Virginia; and Regina Ayres’ sister Zarissa Ayres, 30.
The car with the family was traveling westbound on Rt. 50 approaching the intersection with Rt. 213. The tractor trailer was southbound on Rt. 213 at Rt. 50, police say. The intersection is near Chesapeake College. The crash was reported to police at 1:15 a.m. Saturday.
Four were pronounced dead at the scene. Zarissa Ayres, who was pregnant, was taken to Easton Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police don’t know who was driving the 2006 Suzuki Forenza the family was in.
The truck driver was identified as Yvenet Mayette, 28, of Wilmington, Delaware. He is being treated for injuries at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter.
A traffic signal controls the intersection but investigators don’t know which intersecting road had a red light. Alcohol has not been determined to have been a factor.
