Opelika, AL : Phenix City man killed in single-vehicle crash on April, Thursday 6th 2017
A 22-year-old Phenix City man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early this morning near Phenix City.
Brandon John Woodard was killed when the vehicle in which he was a passenger left the roadway and struck a tree around 12:25 a.m. The crash occurred in the 5800 block of Lee Road 240 in Smiths Station, according to a news release from Bill Harris, Lee County coroner.
First responders to the scene found a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon in the tree line with two occupants.
Woodard died instantly from a massive head injury and multiple blunt force injuries, according to the coroner's report. Woodard was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:05 AM. The driver of the vehicle, William Shannon Ferguson, 23, was transported via ambulance to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus with serious injuries.
Neither occupant is believed to have been wearing a seat belt.
According to the accident investigators, it appears that Ferguson’s vehicle was traveling east on Lee Road 240 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control in a curve, leaving the roadway and striking several trees.
Woodard’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office of the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem exam.
The accident remains under investigation by the Lee County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama State Troopers.
