Big Canyon, UT : One cyclist severely injured in car crash on Saturday August 8th 2015
A Tour of Utah cyclist was severely injured Saturday after crashing into another team's support car.
An Irish member of the MTN-Qhubeka team, Matt Brammeier, crashed into the car at high speed while descending Big Cottonwood Canyon, near Solitude. The car belonged to the Airgas Safeway Cycling Team, Tour of Utah spokesman Frank Zang said.
Brammeier was chasing back to the main pack at the time, and was taken to University Hospital in an ambulance. Though he's stable, Brammeier suffered "severe injuries to his pelvis, ribs and lung," according to a statement from his team.
The cyclist's musculoskeletal injuries "are significant," team doctor Jarrad van Zuydam said in a statement Sunday. The doctor added that "he suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones."
