Lebanon, TN : Four people killed in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Wilson County on Friday evening, October 3, 2014
A family of four from Kentucky was killed and several others injured in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Wilson County Friday night.
It happened around 7:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 232 in Lebanon, just past the Mt. Juliet Road exit.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, two vehicles were stopped in the middle lane of I-40 when four cars ran into them from behind.
Monica Cruce, 43, of Benton, Kentucky, was killed along with her husband Michael and their two sons, 17-year-old Joshua and 14-year-old Stephen.
Four others were injured and flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for treatment.
It's unclear why the two cars were stopped in the middle of the interstate.
Dana Gill was traveling to Knoxville for Saturday's UT game and narrowly missed the vehicles.
She told News 2 she came upon the cars but was able to quickly change lanes.
"Luckily my husband was in the fifth lane [in a separate car] and he gave me a place to go," she said. "I looked in my rear view mirror and I saw other cars swerving as well."
Gill said she saw four people standing in between the two cars and it appeared as though they could not get to the side of the road because of heavy traffic.
She called 911 to report the cars were stopped without their hazard lights at 6:51 p.m., more than 20 minutes before the fatal crash.
Gill talked to a 911 operator and a dispatcher at the Lebanon Police Department who told her the wreck was on the side of the road. She told the police department the cars were not on the side of the road.
"I even asked them if they could call the people and tell them to turn on their hazard lights," she recalled.
Roughly 20 minutes later Gill saw a number of emergency vehicles pass her heading west to what she believes was the fatal crash that killed the Cruce family.
News 2 spoke with Lebanon's police chief who said the first officer was on the scene within seven and a half minutes of receiving the first 911 call reporting a minor accident between the two cars that were stopped.
About four minutes later, 911 began receiving calls about the fatal crash.
Michael Cruce was the Youth Pastor at Rosebower Baptist Church in Paducah, Kentucky. His father told New 2 his son was devoted to the church.
“My son would do everything from be an associate pastor, to a bus driver, to a janitor, to whatever you needed. If you needed him to go visit the sick, that's what he did," J.D. Cruce said.
He said he and his wife are coping with the family's death the best they can.
“I'm so proud of my young family. They're going to be missed. Someday we'll get to join him, and that's how we make it through this," Cruce added.
The family's funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rosebower Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
One of the four injured victims, 24-year-old Chase Fakes of Lebanon, was ultimately charged with driving under the influence.
Wilson County's emergency communications division has not said how many 911 calls they received about the stopped cars prior to the wreck.
