Loveland,CO : Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries in head-on collision in north Loveland on September, Saturday 2nd 2017
A motorcyclist suffered serious bodily injuries in a head-on collision with a car around 1:40 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of 64th Street and Garfield Avenue in north Loveland.
The motorcyclist was heading southbound on Garfield Avenue (U.S. 287) when a woman driving a black Kia SUV northbound on Garfield tried to turn left onto 64th Street, but struck the motorcyclist, said Loveland police Chief Bob Ticer, who was at the scene to help investigate the crash.
Ticer was unsure if the motorcyclist had been participating in the Thunder in the Rockies motorcycle rally this weekend. He was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies under emergent circumstances. The driver of the Kia SUV was uninjured, despite heavy front-end damage to the vehicle.
Spots of blood were visible on the road, and two boots and other items were strewn on the highway from where the collision occurred to where the motorcyclist appeared to have landed.
Neither the motorcyclist nor the driver of the Kia SUV had other passengers, Ticer said.
The accident occurred as LPD resources were occupied with a SWAT response downtown, and Fort Collins police were initially called to the crash in a mutual aid effort, LPD Lt. Ben Hurr said at the downtown SWAT scene. However, Ticer and officers with LPD's crash investigation unit were available to take over at the accident scene.
Both southbound lanes of Garfield Avenue were closed during the beginning stages of the crash investigation, and traffic was re-routed from Garfield onto roads south of the Walmart shopping center and past the crash. Northbound Garfield remained fully open.
Around 2:30 p.m., LPD public information officer Sgt. Jeff Pyle said one southbound lane on Garfield had reopened, and estimated another lane would remain closed for about two hours as officers continued their investigation. The police department requests traffic to avoid the area for a while, Pyle said.
Ticer said a full investigation of the incident will determine whether or not criminal charges will be filed against either party involved.
