Warrenton,VI : Pedestrian killed in beltway crash; second in two day on June, Monday 26th 2017
The Capital Beltway was shut down for four hours Monday morning following a fatal pedestrian accident near Van Dorn Street.
That incident, coupled with another nearby crash, created nightmare gridlock for the morning commute.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said the first crash happened at 4:56 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-495 near Exit 173/Van Dorn Street. Shortly after, there was a second crash involving a pedestrian, who did not survive.
It was the second fatal pedestrian accident on the beltway in as many days. On Saturday, a popular high school football coach in Fairfax County was killed when a box truck struck him as he tried to secure a boat he was towing with family members.
Drivers trapped on the beltway Monday morning swayed between compassion and exasperation as they sat in traffic, tweeting the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Northern Virginia office for updates.
“You've gotta open at least one lane and get traffic moving … we've been sitting for three hours,” one wrote.
“We promise that police are working as fast as they can to make that happen. They're aware of and sensitive to how long you've been there.,” VDOT replied.
As lanes reopened, VDOT urged drivers who hadn’t committed to the beltway to steer clear.
“Alexandria: Pls use an alt route even if you're not on Beltway. Those drivers need room to bail out & have been stuck for hours,” VDOT tweeted.
State police have not released the name of the person killed this morning pending notification of family.
