Lubbock, TX : One person is dead and another person suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday, July 27, 2017
One person is dead and another person suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday morning in northwest Lubbock County.
At about 11:30 a.m., authorities responded to the collision at the intersection of FM 2641 and FM 179, where a Chevrolet pickup reportedly struck a Chevrolet El Camino, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Gonzalez.
A preliminary investigation shows the pickup was traveling east on FM 2641 when the driver reportedly crossed into the path of the El Camino as it traveled south on FM 179.
Gonzalez said it appears the driver of the truck may have disregarded warning signs indicating the upcoming intersection, as well as the stop sign.

The driver of the Chevy El Camino, Hershel Vernon Newman Jr., 68, of Shallowater was taken to University Medical Center by EMS. Newman was later pronounced deceased at UMC, due to his injuries, according to Gonzalez.
The driver of the pickup, 22-year-old Wesley Wright of Levelland, was taken to UMC by a private vehicle.
“A lot of people out in rural areas, such as FM roads and county roads, disregard the stops signs daily because there is not a lot of heavy traffic,” he said. “But unfortunately, at this intersection there’s a lot of traffic from every direction, daily. Lubbock is growing and with the growth comes more traffic, so we would encourage drivers out here to be vigilant with their driving. Drive defensively, pay attention to the roads signs and warning signs that advise you of intersections up ahead. And if there’s stop signs and yield signs, adhere to those because you never know what type of traffic is out here at any particular time.”
DPS, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Transportation and Shallowater Fire Department officials were on scene assisting with the investigation.
Debris from the crash was scattered across the road as officials were measuring the scene.
No charges were filed yet. The crash was still under investigation by Thursday afternoon.
