Fountain Inn, South Carolina
Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol have charged a teen driver after she was accused of driving the wrong way on I-385 and striking another car, killing a 72-year-old woman, on September 1.
Troopers said the crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. near mile marker 24 in the Fountain Inn area.
All northbound lanes were blocked due to the crash but the lanes reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
Troopers said the victim was heading north and her Nissan Sentra was struck by 19-year-old Abrielle Redden of Piedmont, who was heading south in the northbound lane in a Nissan SUV.
The victim was entrapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.
The coroner identified the victim as Geraldine Overstreet Bailey of Browning Avenue in Joanna. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma.
Troopers said the MAIT team was called in to reconstruct the crash.
The Greenville County Detention Center website shows that Redden was arrested on Monday and charged with driving under the influence resulting in a fatality.
She appeared at a bond hearing on Tuesday where she was denied bond.
James McCall, the victim's son, spoke at the hearing.
"She took at 3,500-pound vehicle and turned it into a missile and killed my mother," he said. "She should be put back on the street. There's no way to know she won't do it again."
