Kellogg, IA : 16-year-old boy died and his younger brother injured in a fiery car accident in rural Jasper County on Wednesday, June 8, 2016
A 16-year-old boy died in a fiery car accident that injured his brother and three others Wednesday in rural Jasper County.
At about 7:38 a.m., the Jasper County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about the crash between a car and truck at North 83rd Avenue East and West 84th Street North, north of Kellogg.
The 911 callers reported two people were trapped in the car, while three others were able to escape from the truck, which was on fire, according to a sheriff's office news release.
The car's driver, Trenton Brady, 16, of rural Kellogg, was pronounced dead at the crash scene after emergency responders extricated him from the car.
The truck's driver, Jarrod McDonald, 30, of Marshalltown, was injured and transported to Skiff Medical Center in Newton, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, which is investigating the crash.
Brady's younger brother Ethan, who will be a sophomore at Newton High School this fall, was also injured in the crash and is hospitalized in stable condition at Skiff Medical Center, said Bill Peters, the school's principal, in an email.
Brady had just completed his junior year at Newton High School, Peters said.
All other people involved in the crash were also injured and transported to local medical facilities, according to the sheriff's news release. Their identities and medical conditions have not been released.
According to the State Patrol report, Brady's car failed to stop at a stop sign at East 84th Street North while heading west on North 83rd Avenue East.
McDonald's truck then struck Brady's car, according to the report.
"It is a shocking and devastating loss," Peters said of Brady's death. "We will continue to support the students and family throughout this tragedy."
School officials and coaches met with multiple students Wednesday to help them cope, Peters said. School counselors will be available Friday afternoon for as long as needed, he added.
Kellogg Fire and EMS and Newton Fire and Paramedics also responded to the scene, as well as Life Flight Medical Helicopter and Mid West Ambulance from Grinnell.
