Murfreesboro, TN : Three vehicles, plus trooper's car, involved in crash on I-24 east in Rutherford County Friday night on September 19, 2014
A portion of Interstate 24 east in Rutherford County is closed Friday night after a four vehicle crash.
The crash happened at mile marker 86, near the Joe B. Jackson Parkway exit in Murfreesboro, around 7 p.m. The roadway remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, police received a call from a woman and her boyfriend who were passengers in a taxi stating they were “possibly in an emergency situation inside the cab.”
A trooper attempted to pull over the taxi a short time later. Sgt. Bill Miller with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said the driver of the van slammed on his brakes forcing the deputy to quickly apply his brakes to avoid hitting the cab.
The trooper was rear-ended, causing a chain reaction crash.
The taxi went off of the shoulder of the road and struck a tree before overturning and catching on fire.
The two passengers were able to escape unharmed. The driver of the cab had to be extricated and is being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
No other injuries were reported in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
