Dodge City, KS : Two people are dead following a fiery collision on February, Wednesday 14th 2018

Two people are dead following a fiery collision between an oil tanker and a pickup Wednesday morning just south of Kingsdown.

Phil S. Schilling, 77, of Dodge City, and Tracy A. Price, 46, of Protection were both ejected from their vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred at 8:26 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 54 and 125 Road. Eight units from Ford County Fire responded to the scene.

According to Trooper Michael Racy, public resources officer for the Kansas Highway Patrol, the pickup driven by Schilling was southbound on 125 Road and failed to yield at the intersection, striking Price’s Peterbilt semi which was eastbound on Highway 54, causing a large fire.

Ford County Fire Chief Rob Boyd said the tanker was carrying 7,000 gallons of crude oil. The intensity of the burning crude led his department to contain the fire and let it burn itself out.

Aluminum melts at 1,800 degrees and Boyd said the fire burned more than two hours, melting the trailer.

“The heat and smoke were very intense,” Boyd said. “It melted that tank like it was nothing.”

Officers from the Ford County Sheriff’s Office, Ford County Fire Department and EMS, and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the crash.

The crash closed the highway for more than seven hours. The KHP crash report indicated that Price was the only driver wearing a seatbelt.
