Garner, N.C : Dump truck driver charged after woman killed in crash on US 401 in Wake County on Wednesday night, August 31, 2016
A dump truck driver has been charged in a fatal wreck that occurred Wednesday night in Garner, Lt. Jeff Gordon with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.
The deadly crash closed the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 401 in Wake County for nearly two hours Wednesday night, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday along U.S. 401 south (Fayetteville Road) near Old Stage Road.
According to Gordon, the driver of the dump truck, Calvin Louis Woods Jr, 37, of Cary, was attempting to make a U-turn on the road, but was unable to successfully make the turn. Woods then attempted to back up on the road and re-position the truck so he could complete the turn. As he was backing up, a Nissan passenger car driven by Suzanne Nickol Baker, 33, of Raleigh, slammed into the back of the truck.
Baker was declared dead at the scene, Gordon said.
Woods has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and unsafe movement.
The road reopened around 11 p.m.
