Orem,UT: One man reportedly crashed a van into a cement wall near Utah Valley University on Friday night, 14th November 2014
An Orem man reportedly crashed a van into a cement wall Friday night and then tried to pick a fight with a police officer who tried to help him.
Officers were dispatched to a report of a traffic accident on University Parkway near Utah Valley University. The driver, Luis Nino-Gonzalez, was reportedly driving recklessly, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a retaining wall.
On their way to the crash officers were told Gonzalez, 20, was starting to strip in the intersection. By time officers arrived, Gonzalez already had his shirt off in the freezing cold, and was reportedly about to take off his pants. Police reports state Gonzalez was walking around the intersection and cars were swerving to avoid him.
Officers blocked off part of the intersection to protect Gonzalez. When they approached him, they reportedly heard him talking to himself. They tried coaxing him out of the intersection, but reportedly, he got agitated and put up his fists and danced around “like a boxer would."
Officers reportedly believed Gonzalez would be a danger to himself and others, so one of them used a Taser on Gonzalez and another cuffed him. He was being very uncooperative, kicking, swinging his arms and jumping out of a police hold. Reports state he even kicked one of the officers in the face.
Gonzalez was eventually taken to the side of one of the officer’s patrol vehicles, where paramedics attended to him. While Gonzalez was being held by the car, a large wad of cash and a white plastic bag, which was melted shut, reportedly fell out his pocket.
Officers later opened the bag and several smaller bags containing methamphetamine were reportedly found inside.
Gonzalez was booked into the Utah County Jail on the following charges: distributing a controlled substance, a second-degree felony; possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony; assault by a prisoner (for kicking an officer while detained), a third-degree felony; resisting arrest, a class B misdemeanor; DUI, a class B misdemeanor; reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor; and having an open container in a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor.
