A racecar driver is seriously injured after a crash at Canandiagua Motorsports Park over the weekend.
The Democrat & Chronicle reports veteran sprint car driver Charlie Donk suffered a broken sternum, dislocated shoulder and other injuries after he got tangled up with another driver, Darryl Ruggles, and both cars flipped. The 305 sprint car event was red-flagged, and Donk airlifted to Strong Hospital in Rochester by an emergency medical helicopter.
New York state troopers told WHECthe incident happened around 9 p.m. on the track during the venue's first race of the 2016 season.
Time Warner Cable News reports Donk is still at Strong, and remains in "guarded condition."
According to WHEC, Ruggles was taken to another hospital by ambulance and released afterwards. He is sore, but expected to make a complete recovery.
Neither drivers' injuries are believed to be life threatening.
The racetrack is the same site where 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. was struck and killed by NASCAR star Tony Stewart in 2014. Stewart was cleared of criminal wrongdoing; Ward's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit last year.
