Tustin, CA : Blue Honda slammed a white Mercedes going in a wrong way on Garden Grove Freeway, causes head-on crash on April 24th 2014

A suspected drunk driver caused a head-on crash while driving the wrong way on the Garden Grove (22) Freeway in Tustin Thursday, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP dispatchers received several calls about the wrong-way driver at 11:15 p.m., but officers were unable to intercept the vehicle before the crash.

The DUI suspect was driving a blue Honda and slammed head on into a white Mercedes near Tustin Avenue after he traveled westbound on the eastbound 22 Freeway from the 55 Freeway, the CHP said.

Orange Fire Department responded to the scene. The driver of the Mercedes only suffered minor injuries and declined an ambulance transport. Several other cars narrowly missed the wrong-way driver, CHP Sgt. Koehler said.

"Fortunately there were only two vehicles involved with two drivers with minor to moderate injuries, which (in this incident) almost never happens," Koehler said.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with minor to moderate injuries.
