Sacramento, CA : Passenger killed, Driver arrested in Hwy. 50 crash in Sacramento on Thursday morning, February 11, 2016
A driver was arrested Thursday morning after the vehicle she was driving slammed into the back of a big rig on Highway 50 in Sacramento, killing her passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The big rig was merging onto westbound Highway 50 from Howe Avenue just before 2 a.m. when a Toyota Scion, traveling at least as fast as the speed limit, went into the onramp lane and crashed into the back of the big rig, the CHP said.
The Toyota Scion then drifted into the No. 3 lane where it was hit by a Toyota Corolla going about 65 mph, the CHP said.
The passenger inside the Toyota Scion, who likely was not wearing a seat belt, was killed on impact. The driver, identified as Alexandra Jiminez, 22, of Sacramento, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, officers said.
Jiminez was later arrested on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the CHP said.
The driver of the big rig and the people in the Toyota Corolla were not hurt.
A couple lanes of westbound Highway 50 were closed for several hours for the investigation and cleanup.
No additional information was released.
