Indianapolis ,IN : One woman killed and her grandson injured after SUV hits pickup on Monday ,June 8th 2015

A shoplifting suspect fleeing officers who weren't chasing him ran a red light and caused a three-vehicle crash Monday that killed a woman and injured her grandson and a second passenger in her pickup truck, police said.

Matthew Edmonds, 21, of Indianapolis was captured on foot moments after the crash and faces preliminary charges of theft, resisting law enforcement and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Officers had called off their pursuit of Edmonds' SUV before the crash because of children boarding a school bus in the area, Lt. Richard Riddle said.

The speeding SUV ran a red light near Fountain Square on the city's south side and collided with the pickup truck, whose driver, 63-year-old Donna Niblock of Indianapolis, died of her injuries, police said. Her 11-year-old grandson was hospitalized in critical condition and another passenger, LaDonna Rogers, 37, of Indianapolis was hospitalized in serious condition.

Edmonds was suspected of shoplifting at a Wal-Mart in the Beech Grove enclave several miles southeast of the accident scene. Beech Grove police initially chased the suspect but called off their pursuit, Riddle said.

Witness Pam Shireman told The Indianapolis Star she was riding a city bus when she saw the suspect's SUV speeding past it left of center, and the bus moments later came upon the crash scene.

"It's sad. It's just horrible," Shireman said.
