Ventura County, CA : Three people killed in head on crash on Highway 126 near Camulos Ranch early Sunday morning, June 12, 2016
One man and two women are dead following a two-vehicle head on traffic collision on Highway 126 just west of the Ventura County line early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the westbound lanes of Highway 126 east of Center Street, according to news release prepared by CHP Officer Carlton Streebel, near Camulos Ranch.
Killed in the crash were a 35-year-old man from Los Angeles who was driving a 2015 Kia Optima and two Fillmore residents in a 2012 Toyota Camry, identified only as the 31-year-old driver and passenger, 52.
The driver of the Kia drove the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Highway 126, east of Center Street, in the Number One lane - or fast lane - of the westbound lanes of the highway at an unknown speed.
The driver of the Toyota was westbound on Highway 126, east of Center Street, in the same lane at an unknown speed.
“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the 2015 Kia Optima drove his vehicle the wrong way in the direct path of travel of the Toyota which caused a head-on collision, resulting in major collision damage to both vehicles,” Steebel said.
Paramedics with the Ventura County Fire Department responded to the crash.
“Both drivers and the passenger of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries,” Steebel said.
Due to the severity of the collision both vehicles and debris blocked the roadway, prompting the “complete closure” of Highway 126 for about four hours.
Caltrans also responded to crash and helped CHP with traffic control.
The crash is being investigated by officers of the Moorpark CHP.
