NASHVILLE, TN : NTSB releases preliminary report on deadly Chattanooga school bus crash on Monday, January 16th 2017
The National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report on a Chattanooga school bus crash that claimed the lives of six students and injured 31 others.
Investigators say the Woodmore Elementary School bus, driven by 24-year-old Johnthony Walker, had deviated from its normal route before losing control and crashing into a utility pole and then a tree on Talley Road.
The report states Walker's preliminary toxicology test results for illicit drugs and alcohol were negative. Investigators say since the start of the school year in August 2016, Walker has had one reportable and one non-reportable crash involvement, both times while operating a school bus.
While the report did not indicate what speed Walker was driving at the time, the report states the double-curve road has a posted limit of 25 mph on the first curve and 30 mph on the second curve. Walker "departed the roadway to the left as he passed the second curve."
The report also points out Illinois-based Durham School Services LP, the company that owns the bus, was exempt from "many federal regulations" since it is designated as a "for hire" interstate carrier with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The report states oversight on the carrier fell on the state of Tennessee.
The investigation continues as data recorded during the crash continues to be collected and analyzed.
