Three people are dead after a fiery overnight crash that shut down northbound Highway 99 in Madera for hours.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash took place about 10 p.m. Wednesday night north of the Ellis Street overcrossing as an RV driven by a 56-year-old man drifted from the left to the right lane and collided with a Freightliner.
Both vehicles left the roadway, ran into a eucalyptus tree and burst into flames. The RV driver and a woman in the RV along with the big rig driver all died at the scene. The identities of the victims have not been released.
The highway was closed until about 5:40 a.m. Thursday while the CHP investigated and the crash was cleaned up.
