MONMOUTH, IL : Man jailed following DUI, collision on U.S. 34 between Galesburg and Monmouth on Sunday, 26th January, 2020
At least three have been injured and one man has been arrested following a head-on collision Saturday on U.S. 34 between Galesburg and Monmouth.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25, Warren County deputies responded to a report of a wrong-way driver going east in the west-bound lane of U.S. 34. A crash occurred while deputies were on the way to the incident.
The accident took place on U.S. 34, east of the Cameron exit, in the area of 150th Street. This is the four-lane portion of U.S. 34 between Galesburg and Monmouth.
Investigation revealed Kenneth R. Dutton, 29, Galesburg was traveling the wrong way on U.S. 34 when he struck a west-bound vehicle, then collided with another west-bound vehicle. Two occupants of the first vehicle struck were taken to the hospital for injuries sustained. The names of the other parties involved have not been released by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the car that was struck head-on recounted the event after contacting The Register-Mail. (She chose to remain anonymous.) She said she, her husband and her 8-year-old child were coming home to Monmouth from the Galesburg Walmart when they saw a car on what appeared to be the wrong side of the road, but still on the curve coming onto the highway.
By the time they realized the car was definitely in the wrong lane, the car was “literally in front of” them, she said. The driver was passing a car to her right, meaning the only safe place to go was into the ditch in the center of the road, but it was too late, and they were hit.
The woman received 27 staples in her head, and suffered a concussion and bruised rib. The 8-year-old had stitches in her lip, and as of 4 p.m. Monday the woman’s husband was still in the hospital.
