Ithaca, NY : Mom dies in Seneca County wreck, police say on Saturday, December 17th 2016
A 41-year-old Seneca County woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday while driving with her two children on Route 89 in the Town of Covert, police say.
Marie L. Perez, of Route 96 in Romulus, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, according to Seneca County Sheriff's deputies. The crash happened around noon, while she was traveling north on Route 89 and lost control of her 2001 Ford Focus while rounding a curve, according to police.
The car skidded across the road and into the path of a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck operated by Romulus resident Jonathan Cupp, 44, police said.
Perez's daughters, 6-year-old Jasmine Uresti and 5-month-old Elaina Carlsen, were in child restraints in the rear seats of the Ford Focus and survived the crash, police said. The Ford Focus was demolished and the Silverado sustained heavy damage.
Cupp, along with his 13-year-old son Braeden Cupp, who was a passenger, was given a medical checkup at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. His rear seat passenger, 13-year-old Gage Halsey, was also treated for a head laceration, police said.
Trumansburg firefighters, along with state police assisted sheriff's deputies at the scene of the crash. The road was closed for about four hours during the accident reconstruction investigation.
