Dayton, OH : 3-year-old girl seriously hurt and man killed in a crash on south state Route 49 at Little Richmond Road in Dayton on Thursday, May 7, 2015

A man was killed and a young girl seriously hurt in a crash that injured another man tonight in a three-vehicle crash on south state Route 49.

The 3-year-old girl flown to Dayton Children’s Hospital was not in a car seat or buckled in, Dayton police Sgt. Randy Beane said.

The crash was reported shortly before 7 p.m. on Ohio 49 at Little Richmond Road. The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the state highway from Little Richmond Road south to Hoover Avenue.

“The fire department had to cut the female out of the vehicle. She was 3 years old. She was removed by CareFlight to Dayton Children’s with critical injuries,” Beane said. “The (driver) was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The man who was killed was driving a small sedan that struck the rear of one of two tree trimming trucks that were on the side of the road, the sergeant said.
“It appears the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and probably lost control and hit the rear end of the truck that was disabled,” Beane said.

Two people were inside one of the trucks and were not hurt. Two men were outside working on one of the trucks at the time of the crash. Beane said one of the men suffered minor injuries and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. The second man also suffered minor injuries but declined medical attention.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office also responded to the crash, and Beane said state Route 49 between Little Richmond Road and Hoover Avenue would likely remain closed for another hour or two.

The victims’ names were not released. The sergeant said it’s not clear whether alcohol or drugs were involved, and the crash remains under investigation.
“I hope she pulls through and doesn’t have any serious injuries,” Beane said of the 3-year-old girl. “It’s sad she had to be involved in a crash like this.”
