Belleville, IL : 24-year-old killed in fiery collision of pickup and tanker-truck in Cahokia on Saturday morning, August 13, 2016
Authorities say one person died when a pickup and a tanker-truck collided Saturday morning in Cahokia.
The driver of the pickup, 24-year-old Kaleb Nadler of Cahokia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tanker and the pickup both caught fire after the collision. Firefighters from multiple departments were called to the crash, along with St. Clair County’s hazardous-materials response team.
Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin “Buddy” Dye said the driver of the pickup, which was traveling south on Illinois 3 at what witnesses described as a high rate of speed, collided with a tanker-truck that was pulling out of the Phillips 66 refinery at Illinois 3 and Mississippi Avenue.
“The pickup drove underneath the center of the tanker and landed on the other side, approximately 50 yards to the right. It ended up wrapped around a pole,” Dye said.
Both vehicles burst into flames. Dye confirmed that the driver of the pickup died.
Witnesses told police the driver of the pickup seemed to be reaching speeds of 80-90 mph, Dye said.
Cahokia Police Chief Dave Landmann said police received a call about the accident at 6:10 a.m.
Traffic was tied up for several hours in the area due to the crash. Illinois 3 in Cahokia was expected to be closed for some time while rescue crews dealt with the aftermath. Shortly before noon, State Police reported that the cleanup was taking longer than expected, and that motorists should expect to be diverted from Illinois 3.
