SAN MATEO, CA : One dead, three hurt in Highway 101 crash on Sunday, November 13th 2016
A man died, and three passengers were injured Sunday morning in what appears to be an alcohol-related freeway crash, the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP responded to the crash at 2:11 a.m., after a BMW coupe ran into a tree on the East Third Avenue exit off northbound U.S. HIghway 101. The 22-year-old driver and all three passengers appeared to have been drinking alcohol, according to a statement from CHP spokesman Officer Art Montiel.
All occupants of the car were San Mateo men. One of them, a 21-year-old, suffered major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Stanford University Medical Center. The other two, one of them 22 and other 21, had minor injuries, Montiel said.
The BMW veered left and off the roadway as it came off the exit, then smashed into a tree, Montiel said. Emergency personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
Authorities did not identify him immediately, pending notification of relatives. The CHP was investigating whether any other drugs may have been used.
A Sig Alert went into effect after the crash, and the CHP closed the exit just before 3 a.m. It reopened around 5 a.m. The CHP urges any witnesses to the crash to call 650-369-6261. Check back for updates.
