Helena, MT : Man and woman died after motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Lincoln Road Monday afternoon, Nov 2, 2015
A man and woman from the Helena area died after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a pickup truck on Lincoln Road Monday afternoon, the county coroner said.
The 53-year-old man and 44-year-old woman died upon impact around 3 p.m., Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson said.
The man who was driving the motorcycle has been identified as Craig George Joseph Marple. His passenger was Davine Suzanne Price. Nelson said they both died from traumatic blunt force injuries.
Neither one of the motorcycle riders was wearing a helmet, he said.
Sgt. Jay Nelson with the Montana Highway Patrol said it was not immediately known if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. The driver of the truck, who was not injured, was taken to the hospital for a procedural blood draw. No charges have been filed regarding the wreck.
Troopers were recreating the crash Monday evening.
"We will be going through the scene," Jay Nelson said.
The preliminary assessment, he said, suggests both vehicles were headed westbound on Lincoln Road. The full-sized pickup was in front of the motorcycle and the wreck happened when the truck driver attempted to make a right-hand turn onto Painted Sky Drive.
Monday's traffic deaths were the fifth and sixth in the area since the end of August.
"That's a lot of fatalities on this road in a short amount of time," Jay Nelson said.
He said he's reviewed the recent crashes for similarities. He found the causes were drivers not obeying basic traffic laws, failing to slow and not being aware of their surroundings.
Jay Nelson said he plans on discussing the issue with the Montana Department of Transportation.
"That'll be a later conversation," he said.
