Garden City, KS : A Scott City woman was killed in a car accident in McPherson County on Friday, September 6, 2017
A Scott City woman was killed Wednesday in a car accident in McPherson County after a teen driver failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Emily E. Lightner, 37, was northbound on Plum Street in McPherson County in a white Toyota Prius when a 16-year-old McPherson boy who was eastbound in a Dodge Stratus on Avenue V failed to stop at a stop sign and struck Lightner’s vehicle on the driver’s side, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office decline to name the 16-year-old, saying it is their policy not to identify minors in reports.
According to the sheriff’s office, the Stratus struck a utility pole and caught fire. Lightner’s vehicle veered off the road, through a barbed wire fence and into a pasture, coming to a rest upside down.
Lightner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy was transported by Reno County EMS to Hutchinson Hospital.
Lightner was wearing a seat belt. It is unknown at this time if the 16-year-old was wearing his, according to the sheriff’s office.
