Bellingham, WA : Driver, 23, killed in high-speed crash into tree on Lummi View Drive on April, Sunday 10th 2017

A Whatcom County man died Sunday night when his car crashed into a tree on Lummi View Drive, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Juan Carlos Aldana, a resident of the Lummi Reservation, had been driving a black Mitsubishi Eclipse south on Lummi View Drive, when he lost control of his car in a right curve around 6:50 p.m., according to the state patrol.

State troopers believe Aldana was speeding.

The 2001 Eclipse crossed the northbound lane and rolled off the road to the east. The car’s roof hit a tree in the 2100 block of Lummi View. The car had been going so fast that the frame wrapped around the tree, said Trooper Travis Shearer.

Aldana died at the scene. He was 23.

The driver had been wearing a seat belt. He’s not suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the state patrol.

Minutes before the crash, law enforcement took a 911 call about an erratic driver on the reservation. Investigators believe it was the same Eclipse, Shearer said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, said Dr. Gary Goldfogel, the Whatcom County medical examiner.

This was the second high-speed deadly crash into a tree in Whatcom County in three days. Two brothers – Cesar, 21, and Jorge Cruz-Cruz, 19 – died early Friday, when a red Toyota Camry slammed head-on into an evergreen tree about 3 miles south of Lynden. Troopers believe that car was speeding, too.
