Brooklyn, NY : Woman killed, man injured after getting struck by stolen SUV in Brooklyn on Sunday, May 1, 2016
An out-of-control driver in a stolen SUV slammed into two people on a Brooklyn sidewalk Sunday — killing a 51-year-old woman, police said.
The stolen gray Toyota 4Runner collided with a red sedan, careened onto the sidewalk and hit Chooi Tan and a man at E. 94th St. and Avenue K in Canarsie around 12:50 p.m., police said. The SUV then crashed into a white wrought iron fence and wall before stopping.
The SUV driver and another man ran off, but the sedan’s driver stayed put.
Tan, of Canarsie, died at Brookdale University Hospital, authorities said. The 57-year-old injured man and the sedan’s driver, 20, were in stable condition.
“I was inside when I heard a bang,” said a woman, who identified herself as Shama. “When I came out, two guys ran out from the car that hit into my wall.”
The injured woman was bleeding from the mouth and ears, Shama said. “A guy was saying, ‘Help! Help! Help!’ I called 911,’ ” she said. “I told them there was somebody on the ground due to an accident. They were trying to have me explain. I said, ‘I can’t explain. Just send an ambulance.’ It was sad.”
Shama said the men in the SUV were young. One wore a black hoodie. She couldn’t describe the other. “It all happened too fast,” she said.
Greg Floyd, 45, said the SUV driver also smashed into his Chevy 2011 Tahoe.
“When you steal a vehicle, it’s never a good outcome. Normally they are being chased by the police. They weren’t even being chased. They just ran a stop sign. They were teenagers, out for a joyride,” he said shaking his head in disgust. “I hope justice prevails and I hope they find them. Time will tell.”
Cops brought in dogs to catch the scent of the suspects. No arrests had been made Sunday night.
