Mooresville, N.C : Bicyclist injured in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 150 in Mooresville on Saturday night, January 16, 2016
Mooresville, North Carolina
Mooresville police are looking for a silver Honda Civic that they say may have been involved in a weekend hit-and-run.
Shawn Stoddard, 19, was riding his bicycle along Highway 150 in Mooresville Saturday night when he noticed headlights close behind him.
"I turned around and that's when the guy hit me from behind," Stoddard said. "All I know is I spun in the air to the side and hit the ground."
The car also dragged his bike several hundred feet.
"The guy braked for a second, and that's how I was able to see the taillights," he said. "The driver just took off."
Stoddard is out of the hospital and recovering from his injuries. He suffered no broken bones, but several bruises and road burns.
Others on the road that night saw the accident.
"If they hadn't been there, someone else could have hit him," said Stoddard's mother, Jennifer Ruffino.
Two good Samaritans stopped and called 911. They stayed with Stoddard until paramedics arrived.
Shawn's mother said she was grateful that those people were there to help, but anger at the hit-and-run driver led her to post a picture to Facebook, which has been shared more than 3,000 times.
"I've been getting a lot of private messages from people with possible tips and condolences, so it's incredible," she said.
She's encouraging people to forward that information to police.
She hopes that her post also compels the driver to come forward.
"You will never feel better until you admit what you did and come forward," Ruffino said. "It will eat at you for the rest of your life. You could have killed somebody."
