San Diego, CA : 1 dead, 1 hospitalized in wrong way DUI crash on Saturday night, December 17, 2016

A driver who is accused of driving drunk and killing another woman while in her car, is recovering at Scripps La Jolla.

Around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night, California Highway Patrol responded to a fatal head-on crash in the 4S Ranch neighborhood.

Officers say a 34-year-old suspected drunk driver in a white minivan was driving on the wrong side of the road before slamming into a gray Toyota Corolla.

The collision happened at 16250 Camino Del Norte in the westbound lanes east of Camino San Bernardino, where at least one of the vehicles caught on fire killing the Corolla
driver, a 39-year-old Hispanic woman.

"DUI incidents have a lasting effect on both sides of the family," said CHP Officer Steven Robinson, "If it's not death, it's jail time, it's [a] suspended license, it's increased insurance premiums and court fees.”

As a 15-year-veteran officer Robinson has seen his fair share of wrecks and was signing up people at the Chargers game to pledge to be designated drivers.

In the age of UBER and ride sharing alternatives, officers are urging the public to always be mindful and also watch for any suspicious behavior.

“Be on the lookout for those swerving drivers the speeders,” Robinson said. “Vehicles parked in [a] lane… just be aware."

The suspected drunk driver in Saturday’s crash was taken to the hospital after sustaining major injuries. Both her name and the name of the victim have not been released.

“It has a great impact on not only the officer, but the innocent people who are affected, that are out there just minding their own business obeying the traffic laws,” Robinson said. “And their worlds change in an instant."
