Woolwich, ME : One injured in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night on Route 127 in Woolwich on August 26, 2014

A Woolwich man was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center early Wednesday morning following a single-vehicle crash on Route 127. Stephen A. Smith, 47, was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram truck when he allegedly fled from a Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s deputy who pulled him over on Route 12, according to a release from Chief Deputy Brett Strout. Deputy Michael Fitzpatrick first attempted to pull over Smith at about 11:16 p.m. Tuesday, after Smith allegedly sped past Fitzpatrick northbound on Route 1 near the Sagadahoc Bridge. But according to Strout, Smith refused to stop and turned left onto Route 127, also known as Middle Road, and drove erratically to the intersection of Route 128, or River Road, where he pulled over. When Fitzpatrick approached the truck, Smith allegedly “sped off,” returning to the northbound lane of Middle Road. About a half-mile from the intersection, Smith lost control, drove off the road and crashed into a tree, according to Strout. He was ejected from the truck. Strout said Smith did not appear to be wearing a seat belt. Fitzpatrick and Deputy Robert Mayer, who also responded, administered first aid until members of the Woolwich Fire Department and a Bath rescue truck arrived. As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, Smith was listed in critical condition, Strout said. A hospital spokeswoman said at 10 a.m. she could not release any information about Smith’s condition. Strout said police are not sure why Smith failed to stop. The crash is being investigated by Maine State Police and the Bath Police Department.
