Cocoa, FL : One person killed and 10 others injured in a three-vehicle crash on southbound I-95 in Brevard County on Saturday October 31 2015
One person was killed and 10 others injured in a three-vehicle crash on southbound I-95 in Brevard County.
The crash happened at 4 a.m. near mile marker 199, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Three vehicles were traveling south on the inside lane of I-95, with Annette Marie Soto Diaz, 22, of Palm Bay, driving a 2013 Mercedes C250 behind a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by Cynthia Tzoc, of Rhode Island.
Diaz was trying to overtake Tzoc's vehicle when the front of her Mercedes hit the rear of the Camry, which caused the Camry to hit the center dividing wall.
The right front passenger of the Mercedes opened the door and tried to get out of the vehicle, but as she was doing so, Karthik Raju, 25, of Melbourne drove up on the scene in a 2015 Dodge Dart.
Troopers said Raju had tried to avoid crashing into the two cars but was unable to completely avoid hitting them, and he crashed into the right side of the Mercedes.
The passenger, who has not been identified, died at the scene of the crash.
The force of the collision caused the Dart to end up on the right shoulder, where it caught fire. All four people in the Dart were able to get out of the vehicle after it caught fire.
Two of the passengers - Harsha Paladugel, 22, of Melbourne, and Malarkannan Kaliavardhan, 23 of Melbourne - sustained serious injuries, while Raju and a third passenger, Iruthayaraju Andrews, 29 of Melbourne, received minor injuries.
Two passengers in Diaz's car - Jena Rae Randone, 24, of Melbourne, and Deryl Wilson, 21, of Melbourne - sustained serious injuries, while Diaz and passenger Andrea Marie Millen, 25, of Palm Bay, received minor injuries.
Tzoac and a passenger in her car, Arlene Robitaille, of Rhode Island, were both seriously injured.
The southbound lanes were shut down for several hours, with traffic being diverted at State Road 520. The lanes reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
The northbound lanes were not affected by the crash.
