Tallahassee,FL : Long-time Florida Senator dead in crash on August, Monday 21st 2017
Former long-time Florida Senator Greg Evers has died as a result of a car accident Monday night in his hometown of Baker in Okaloosa County. The single vehicle accident occurred on Griffith Mill Road.
“The very preliminary information is that it appears Mr. Evers passed away sometime last night,” Lt. Eddie Elmore, public information officer for the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to Elmore, indications are Evers was driving, failed to negotiate a curve and his car overturned into Penny Creek. The car was not discovered until Tuesday afternoon.
Elmore says a passerby saw the car in the creek and reported it. Florida Highway Patrol was dispatched at 12:25 p.m. Evers was dead on arrival.
His political career took off in 2001 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He served in the House until 2010 when he was elected to the Florida Senate. In 2016, he lost his election bid for the U.S. House of Representatives to now-Congressman Matt Gaetz. Evers campaigned on many issues but was most outspoken on the second amendment to the Constitution and was a staunch defender of the “Right to Life.”
In addition to his time in the Senate and House of Representatives, Evers spent his life as a farmer. He owned Baker Farm Center since 1981 and Akers of Strawberries since 1990.
Evers leaves behind a wife and three adult children.
