One man was hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash Monday evening outside Rantoul.
According to an Illinois State Police report, at 7:26 p.m. Monday, John H. Diamond, 31, of Champaign was driving a gray 2003 Ford Edge south on Interstate 57 when he fell asleep at the wheel and left the highway to the left near the Rantoul exit.
Diamond's vehicle hit the end of a guardrail and landed in the left lane of I-57. As Diamond attempted to leave his vehicle, it was hit by two other vehicles, a black SUV driven by Aliza J. Palmer, 39, of Urbana and a yellow semitrailer driven by Michael A. Bakay, 64, of Lemont. Both of those vehicles sustained damage, but neither driver reported any injuries.
Diamond, meanwhile, sustained what police called non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
All three drivers were wearing their seat belts, police said.
Diamond was ticketed for improper lane usage.
