Winter Haven, FL : Tamera Persong, 52, struck and killed in hit and run crash in Winter Haven on Wednesday night, February 18, 2015
Video released Thursday gives a better idea of who left the scene of a deadly accident in Winter Haven Wednesday night.
Around 7:30 pm, Tamera Persong, 52, was struck while crossing 1st Street South in the area of Ave. F South.
Nearby surveillance video shows the driver pull over and go to the scene for a few minutes then drive off,
Police believe the vehicle was a grey or white BMW SUV and have identified a vehicle that may have been involved.
The vehicle has damage and matches the description given by witnesses, police said. It will be processed tomorrow.
Detectives are working to identify the driver of the vehicle.
Persong's son Michael is devastated by the loss of his mother and sickened by the fact the driver left the scene.
"They wanted to get out of there as fast as possible because they didn't want to deal with the consequences of what would happen,” he said.
Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird is hoping the driver's conscience will kick in and he will turn himself in.
“We don't know what was in that person's mind, what they were thinking- whether it was fear, intoxication or a suspended license. But none of those are reasons to leave an accident,” Bird said.
If you have any information about the collision or the driver's whereabouts, call police.
