A 75-year-old Richmond woman was killed and five others were injured after a tire failed, causing an SUV to crash on Interstate 64 in Newport News Sunday, police said.

The single-vehicle crash happened shortly before 5:15 p.m. near J Clyde Morris Boulevard, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.Investigators think the 2004 Chevrolet SUV was traveling eastbound on I-64 when a rear tire failed, causing the vehicle to run off road, strike the jersey wall and flip multiple times, Anaya said.

Six people were inside the SUV. Two, including the 75-year-old woman, were ejected from the vehicle, she said.

The driver's side back seat passenger, Wilnet Gordon, 75, of Richmond, died at the scene, according to Anaya.

The front seat passenger, who also was ejected, suffered life-threatening injuries, Anaya said. He was flown by Nightingale Air Ambulance to Norfolk General Hospital.

The 38-year-old driver, a 28-year-old passenger and two children were taken by ambulance to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for their injuries, she said.

Investigators think the tire tread caused it fail, according to Anaya.

The driver, a 38-year-old Glenn Allen woman, was charged with having defective equipment, no liability insurance and failure to register a vehicle, Anaya said.
